You don't have to be a purist when it comes to modern design - It is very common to see an eclectic mix of modern and antiques in homes.

The designers at welivelivelikethis.ca from Vancouver state that "mixing items is essential"
I beleive that for home owners there are no rules as long as it is visually attractive.
